Cross Country
Shelton Striders members regularly take part in cross-country events. As well as usually sending teams to the North of England Championships and the National Championships, we take part in our local Today's Runner League, incorporating races throughout Derbyshire and Leicestershire.
The League season runs throughout the coldest, wettest and muddiest months of the year and points are awarded to each runner depending on their finish position, which add up to each team's score. Striders' ladies have won their competition in 2002, 2003 and again in 2004.
Race reports feature in Striding Out throughout the winter, copies are available at either Friday or Wednesday training sessions.
In addition to the formal team competition, we run an internal club competition amongst ourselves. John Thornton does all the work on this and at the end of the cross-country season, trophies are awarded to the winners. The scoring and awards system is shown at the bottom of the page.
2004 was a particularly succesful year for Shelton Striders. As well as our ladies team winning their competition for the third year running, we also won a league championship trophy and won the 'B' final, the first time that anyone has taken this trophy away from Hinckley since 1996.
Individual success came to Wendy Roethenbaugh, with 6 wins out of six in the series, a feat that Lizzie Hill may have repeated if she had got to all of the races. Both Wendy and Lizzie won their repective competitions, Wendy; the seniors, Lizzie; Years 7&8 girls. Ellen Fox, Katie and Tom Roethenbaugh all finished 3rd overall in their age group competitions, whilst mighty Matt Chetwyn won the Years 10&11 Championship. Sam Watson was 2nd in his age group (Yrs 7&8), whilst Roger Booth was 1st and Harry Sloan 5th in the men's V50 competition, showing the full range of Striders' strengths.
