Activities
Friday night meetings
Shelton Striders meet at 7pm on Friday evenings at Boulton Lane Community Centre. Members meet for a run, to catch up on news and gossip and to find out about future races and events. You do not have to be interested in, or any good at, racing to come along. We usually have a few announcements, then disperse into several groups, covering distances from roughly 2 to 5 miles at different paces, to suit all. Some of us take running quite seriously, others much less so, but the emphasis on Fridays is on the social side of things, with most runs at 'conversation pace'. After the run there is the opportunity for a cup of tea, a biscuit and a shower (in whatever order you like).
Wednesday Training
On Wednesdays at 6pm, we meet up for an hour's training, supervised by one of Shelton Striders' leading lights and founding members, Graham Pickering. Graham gently but firmly puts us through our paces on the hills at Darley Park in the summer and at Moorways track in the winter. These sessions build fitness, speed and strength, but are also lots of fun and curiously addictive. There are no showers at Darley Park but there are at Moorways. A small charge to cover the cost of hiring the track is made at Moorways. At the end of each season, before the change of venue we have a small social, with sandwiches, beer etc.
Competitions
The club has its own Road Race Championship, its own internal Cross Country competition and a series of off-road races called The Headbangers, all with many age categories. We also organise a series of team and handicap events throughout the summer which give the opportunity for runners of any speed to compete and win. Last but not least are our stumbles, a series of runs through our beautiful local countryside, taking in several pubs en route.
Local Events
Every year the club supports and helps to organise local events. The
Merrill College 10k and fun run,the Derby leg of Race for Life and the
Today's Runner cross-country league are all events that we support every
year.
One of the events we enter every year is the High Peak Relay, a 10-stage
race on the High Peak Trail from Cromford to Pomeroy. In 2005 Shelton
Striders entered two mixed teams, coming 33rd and 38th out of the 48 teams
that took part. For full results visit http://www.runningwithdavid.com/
See Visit the Forthcoming Events page for more details of events that we take part in.
Presentation night
In January the club has a grand presentation night, when the year's prizes are given out and club members have the chance to eat, drink, be merry and dance badly.
